Various Others and Bayerischer Rundfunk present the premiere of “Double Bind” by Cem A., curated by Hanns Lennart Wiesner, at Funkhaus Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR) on Friday May 15.
“Double Bind” is a performative discussion format, that brings together speakers from different professional fields around the shared theme around the contradictory demands that shape how we construct reality today. A moderator poses identical questions to two speakers in turn. One responds in the spotlight while the other waits in headphones, unable to hear. Only the audience holds both perspectives. Projected onto a screen behind the speakers, a custom-built AI system visualizes each speaker's key terms in real time, mapping where their statements converge, diverge, or bypass each other entirely.
For this first iteration “Double Bind: On Reality”, the participants are:
• Julia Barthel, investigative data journalist at BR.
• Prof. Dr. med. Niclas Broer, head of department of plastic surgery at Klinikum
Bogenhausen
• Helena Ernst, Freelance Conservator for Modern and Contemporary Art
• Hannah Heinzinger, moderator and journalist at BR
• Stuart McSpadden, director and filmmaker at BR
Alongside the discussions, the large scale inflatable sculpture Untitled (Elephant in the Room) (2026) will occupy the lobby of Funkhaus Bayerischer Rundfunk with an unavoidable presence, inviting visitors to negotiate what they believe remains unaddressed. Throughout the offices, Floor Pieces (2023-ongoing) will interrupt the everyday work flow, movements and thoughts of the employees of BR, which is part of ARD, one of the largest public broadcaster in the world.
